The Leadership Question That Changed Everything

Years ago, I sat in a room filled with associates, managers, and partners.

A senior leader looked around and asked us all the same question:

💡 Who here would consider you their mentor?

It wasn’t directed just at the partners. It wasn’t about titles.

👉 It was about how we showed up—every day.

The message was clear: Leadership isn’t given. It’s earned.

It doesn’t start when you have the title. It doesn’t start when you get promoted.

It starts with how you show up today.

Many of us think leadership is about reaching a certain position. But in reality:

✔ A junior associate who consistently supports their peers is leading.

✔ A manager who listens and advocates for their team is leading.

✔ A partner who builds trust through action—not just authority—is leading.

Leadership and followership can happen at every level.

Because respect isn’t automatic. It’s earned through daily actions.

Here’s what makes people see you as a leader—regardless of your title:

✅ Lead by example. People don’t follow words. They follow actions. Show up the way you want others to.

✅ Invest in others. Mentorship isn’t a formal program—it’s how you support, challenge, and encourage those around you.

✅ Earn respect, don’t demand it. Real leadership isn’t about power—it’s about trust. And trust is built over time, not granted overnight.

If someone ran a survey today, would your name show up? Would people say you helped shape their path?

Leadership isn’t just about where you go. It’s about who you bring with you.
