When Overthinking Looks Like Progress (But Isn’t)

Some of the smartest leaders I coach aren’t stuck because they lack options.
They’re stuck because they’ve been over-strategising their own careers.

They can design a transformation roadmap for a global business…
but when it comes to their own next chapter, the language shifts to:

“I’m exploring my options.”
“I’m still thinking about what’s next.”
“I’ll make a move when things are clearer.”

Weeks pass.
Months pass.
Nothing actually changes.

Here’s the truth most high achievers don’t want to admit:

Overthinking feels productive, but movement is what creates clarity.

You can refine a CV until it sparkles, rewrite your narrative a dozen times, gather advice from mentors, consume leadership content — and still feel unclear.

Not because you’re doing it wrong.
But because clarity isn’t built in isolation.
It’s built in motion.

💡 Why Smart People Get Stuck

High performers often fall into three patterns:

1️⃣ Waiting for perfect clarity before taking action

They want the “right” next step, which delays any step.

2️⃣ Over-editing documents instead of testing their story

They polish, refine, update — but don’t share it with the market.

3️⃣ Mistaking thinking for movement

They gather more information, see more possibilities, feel less certain, and loop back into analysis.

Meanwhile, the market moves.
Roles shift.
Conversations they should be part of happen without their voice in the room.

Not because they’re unqualified —
but because they stayed in private reflection long after they needed public motion.

🧭 The Momentum Protocol (One Week, Three Steps)

If you feel stuck in analysis mode, here is a simple structure to restart momentum — without overhauling your life, quitting your role, or creating a 5-year plan.

This protocol works because it forces clarity through action, not overthinking.

1️⃣ Clarify Your Filters

You are not choosing from infinite options — only aligned ones.

Your filters are:

  • What energises you

  • What you want less of

  • The problems you’re best at solving

  • The environments where you do your best thinking

Clear filters shrink the decision-making load and give structure to your next move.

2️⃣ Update ONE “Front Door”

Your “front doors” are where the market meets you:

  • LinkedIn headline

  • The top third of your CV

  • Your positioning narrative

  • Your About or Featured section

Pick just one and update it to reflect who you are now, not who you were two roles ago.

A single visibility upgrade sends a stronger signal than another month of internal debate.

3️⃣ Start TWO Real Conversations

Not networking.
Not reaching out for “opportunities.”
Not asking for favours.

Just real conversations with real humans:

  • Someone who has seen you do excellent work

  • Someone whose thinking sharpens yours

  • Someone in the environment you want to move toward

Say something simple like:

“Here’s what I’m exploring next — what am I not seeing?”
or
“Here’s what I want to be doing more of — who’s wrestling with this?”

Clarity lives in conversations, not documents.

⏱️ The Career Clarity Block

If you want to accelerate all of this, schedule a weekly 60–90-minute block dedicated to your career.

Here’s the structure:

  • 10 minutes → Clarify your filters

  • 10 minutes → Update one front door

  • 10 minutes → Write or send one message

  • 30 minutes → Optional reflection or follow-up

This one tiny commitment breaks the overthinking loop —
and builds a habit of momentum.

🪞 Melissa’s Note: Movement Creates Clarity

Years ago, I spent months trying to “figure out” my next move.

I gathered data.
I refined my CV.
I thought deeply about what aligned role I wanted.

But nothing shifted until I did something small:

I reached out to people whose thinking I respected.

Within weeks, everything changed —
not because my circumstances changed,
but because I stopped waiting for perfect clarity and started moving again.

Clarity didn’t lead my movement.
Movement led my clarity.

🧠 Reflection Prompt

Ask yourself:

“What’s one small move I’ve been postponing that would give me new information?”

Write it down.
Do it this week.
The staircase will reveal itself one step at a time.
