Becoming Batman: A Story of Self-Advocacy

As a kid, I was told girls should be quiet and delicate. But my parents? They didn’t buy into that. They let me race go-karts and crash bumper cars with my brother.

Then came my biggest self-advocacy moment at five. In nursery school, everyone got to be Batman. Except me.

By Friday, after asking every day, the biggest kid told me, “You can’t be Batman; you’re a girl.”

So, I did what any five-year-old would do: I bit him. Yes, my parents made me apologize. But they never said I was wrong for wanting to be Batman. They just taught me to fight for myself in better ways.

Why This Story Matters Now

Fast forward 30 years in the corporate world, and this lesson still sticks. I’m proud of it. My parents didn’t tell me I couldn’t take up space; they just taught me how to do it strategically.

Leadership Insight: Be Your Own Batman

Women are often told they “can’t” lead, speak up, or make change. Here’s how to stand tall:

  • Trust your gut: If it feels wrong, you have the right to be there.

  • Advocate wisely: Speak up, strategically.

  • Take up space: Don’t shrink yourself—be Batman.

Quick Tip: Build Your Self-Advocacy

Next time you’re sidelined, use humor, confidence, or directness to speak up. Don’t wait for permission—take your turn.
